Why doesn't anyone question this?
Why don't any of you religous people out there question why the church has $600M extra dollars lying around in property, artwork and bank accounts? God lives a lavish lifestyle...

Goodbye Steve Irwin
I'm really sorry to see that Steve Irwin died. If nothing else, he was a genuine role model for people. He's was a good, hard working and enthusiastic family man who risked everything to pursue his dreams.

Morality - Discuss
The most interesting thing about morality is the irony of the difference between morality in theory and morality in practice. Morality in theory is God judging man. Morality in practice is Man judging Man in the absence of God.

Godless
Why is godless such a bad word? Well, it's not really, but people use it publicly as if it is. To me, it's an aspiration that one day we will all be 'godless'. We don't need any Gods. The one we have now is ripping the world to pieces either via his inaction, indecision and ostensible indifference.

The Myth of Religion
You show me a true religious man and I'll show you a heretic. A very bold statement, but true nonetheless. As both a society and as individuals, Western culture is nowhere near as religious as we think we are.

The Prophet Muhammad vs. Free Speech
I'm not going to re-print caricatures of Muhammad. (I'd like to, just because it will annoy a lot of these rage-filled crazy people, but I won't simply because it would serve no other purpose.) We've all seen the images by now anyway.

Aftermath of the Hurricane
Everyone and his dog has something to say about the recent Hurricane. And why shouldn't they? This disaster is enormous and there's a lot to consider. While most people are busy discussing the current events happening in the aftermath of the storm, I'm thinking ahead and wondering about several important issues that will eventually hit the front pages.

Michael Jackson Sells Only 8000 Records
So MJ beat the rap, but while the judicial system gave him the Get Out of Jail Free card, the court of public opinion has said something quite the opposite. MJ has lost his grass-roots support among the population. He can't give his latest album away. People aren't buying and many of them didn't even know he was recording anything at all. I watch a lot of news and heard nothing about this release, for instance. Even the media is giving MJ the pass it seems. It's only really been a few short months since the trial, after all, and perhaps people are finished with Jackson-Mania finally.

Gun Control and Safety
The NRA, not ironically a far-right organization, is strictly against gun control. After all, if someone is robbing your house, you should be able to shoot them, right? So goes the logic, anyway. I agree that self defense is important and is also a basic right. You should be able to stop anyone trying to kill you or harm others. But is an armed-to-the-teeth society really the answer?

Separation of Church and State?
Today the highest court in the land ruled that the 10 Commandments have no place in our courtrooms and I of course agree, although a recent AP poll suggests that only 1 in 4 feel the same way I do. This isn't totally surprising although it is certainly saddening. Once again, more then 70 percent of Americans are willing to overlook one of the most basic tenets of our system of government - the separation of church and state - in order to satisfy their own desire to push their religion on others.

Woman Killed During Exorcism
The following article shows what religion was probably like during the middle ages. It's interesting to note that modern American religious doctrine would never allow such treatment, although the spiritual foundation for exorcisms is still just as valid now as it was 1000 years ago. After all, the devil still exists, even in American religious culture, right?

Schaivo Died 15 Years Ago
Well the results are in and the right was wrong again. Terri Schaivo was a vegetable and no one can dispute that since the autopsy is complete. Her brain was just over 600 grams - less then half the weight of a normal brain - and she was blind which is a fact that escaped notice by her parents in spite of spending 15 years at her bedside, not to mention the doctors that examined her.

Eternity - Have We Thought this Through?
When I tell people I don't really believe in God, invariably I get asked about the after-life. "What happens when you die?" is the typical question. So that got me thinking. What if there was an after-life? What if I really did live on into infinity?

Polytheism - What was God Thinking?
2000 years before anyone ever heard of Jesus, The Holy Spirit or even the Devil, there was Zeus and the other Gods that we today refer to collectively as Greek Mythology. Of course 4000 years ago it wasn't mythology. It was the rule of the day. It was more real then Jesus to today's Christians. Why? Because there was very little technology to point out contradictions that today help debunk the fallacies of religion. In those days, there simply were very few reasons not to believe and accordingly there were very few non-believers.

Forced to Abandon Substances?
CNN had a short news item yesterday on a number of scientific initiatives that would presumably eliminate the chemical dependency of smoking. When someone smokes, the body interacts with nicotine and proteins are sent to the brain causing a 'reward response' - that feeling of satisfaction one gets when they smoke.

What do you Religious People Think?
The world is at war with the world, whether it's outwardly declared or not. Jew hate Muslims who hate Christians who hate someone else and so on. Of course I'm generalizing, but basically you have many large groups of people who hate each other based on religious ideology. While most people on both sides are probably moderates, there fact remains that there is a large and undeniable problem on Earth between different religious groups.

All Religious Books Need to Be Flushed
We are all aware of the controversy surrounding the alleged flushing of Korans in Guantanamo, Cuba by US soldiers who were attempting to unsettle detainees. As if that wasn't bad enough, Creighton Lovelace, pastor of Danieltown Baptist Church in North Carolina has put up his own sign in front of his church reading 'The Koran Needs to be Flushed!'

The Supreme Court can Still Be Filibustered.
If the filibuster was eliminated, the majority party in Washington would have had the right to push through any judicial appointments they choose as long as senators voted along party lines. Even though this issue became widely debated over Appeals Court nominees, the real underlying issue was whether the minority party (the democrats) would have the right to filibuster Supreme Court picks.

In Offense of Marriage
Marriage is under attack. Not by liberals or atheists or even gays. It's under attack by democracy itself - by freedom. It's self destructing a little piece at a time. The fact is, marriage is NOT a democratic institution, nor is it designed to be. It's an old social order trying to operate under the same rules as it did 1000 years ago, but times have changed.
